Here is an interesting and very early piece from the 18th Century or possibly much earlier. This high relief bas most probably originates from Italy.
Under a brown treacle like glaze and showing some crackling and chips. Mary and Jesus are showing with defined Halos. These tiles were often washed in colour and gold originally.
By the fourth century, halos were widely used in Christian art as a symbol of holiness, spiritual power and innocence.
At the beginning only God, Jesus and Mother Mary were depicted with Halos.
