This is an impressive example of a near life-size craved wooden fine art sculpture figure showing a mother nursing a child from the Asante people of Ghana. Maternity figures of this time often feature on traditional Asante shrines.
Despite the physical bond of breastfeeding, the sculptures that picture figures who are not looking at one another does not apply lack of affection, but is merely a convention to convey dignity and self control. The presence of the child says she is complete, mature woman.
In very good condition and with a lovely patina. Some rubbing and scrapes in all the right places with one small wood split in the child’s leg. Amazingly craved from one piece of wood.
